What I learned
For this assignment, I chose to focus on Scripps Mercy Hospital because it is a hospital in my hometown where I personally received care after fracturing my elbow while playing soccer. That experience made the project feel more meaningful, and I wanted the opportunity to learn more about how the hospital operates from a strategic perspective. I also saw this as a chance to apply classroom concepts to a real organization that has directly impacted my life.
Working on the strategic planning document helped me understand how much research and analysis go into hospital planning, especially when comparing one hospital to its competitors. I learned how healthcare organizations evaluate services, identify gaps, and seek opportunities to improve care and the patient experience. Overall, this assignment strengthened my research skills, and it gave me a better understanding of how hospitals position themselves in a competitive healthcare environment.
